Does anyone know of any good foreign language learning schools in the US or abroad?
I would either like to learn an Asian language or Arabic. I heard the Defense Language Institute in Monterrey, CA, is a top place in the US, but that is for military personnel. Does anyone know of any good colleges, schools, or “brick and mortar” programs that are designed to help someone master a language. I am NOT interested in Rosetta Stone or any online programs.
Georgetown is a great university. They offer a lot of languages and their teachers are top notch as far as I know. At this Chinese event in DC, one of their students always win.

Private Language Schools Discourse on the Net $96.59 In todays globalizing world, English is a highlyvalued asset. As a result, people worldwide are increasingly taking courses in English as a second language (ESL). This situation has been capitalized by private language schools promoting funandfast ESL courses combined with other services not typical of education, such as adventure vacations; the Internet being a key tool for reaching a global clientele. The issue at stake is how to discern what objectives these schools seem to further discursively. This study examines how private language schools use discourse and visuals on their websites in order to portray a vested representation of ESL instruction. Current issues on the hegemonic status of English as well as widespread assumptions in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT) are discussed. Selected private language schools websites are scrutinized by using elements from Faircloughs approach to Critical Discourse Analysis and Kress and van Leuuvens visual grammar. This work should be useful for researchers working within a critical paradigm, and for anyone interested in taking ESL courses to make informed decisions about what private language schools have to offer. Marketing in Schools $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Marketing in schools is a widespread phenomenon in which schools sign contracts allowing certain businesses to conduct marketing activities in school facilities primarily advertising. For example, a school might allow only one brand of soft drink to be sold in vending machines on the campus; in return, the soft drink company would provide compensation to the school (frequently money, but it may provide other compensation as well, such as building new facilities or paying for school supplies). The phrase usually refers to arrangements by elementary schools or high schools, rather than higher education; because this marketing is seen as targeting children, it is very controversial. One example of this is Channel One News, an educational TV show shown in schools that shows two minutes of advertising. Channel One is shown in over 11,500 middle and high schools across the United States, reaching 7.7 million students. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Aspects of Language and Language Teaching $38.79 This 1968 book explains what was a new approach to language teaching, and introduces teachers and students to the linguistic and psychological theories which underlie these methods. Language laboratories were becoming commonplace in schools, colleges and universities of the day. Unhappily, however, the teaching techniques used in them seldom realized the full potential of these valuable teaching aids. The author based his approach firmly on the spoken language and describes the transformational generative grammar and scale and category grammar which form the basis of modern methods and goes on to show how these principles can be applied in teaching. Pshce in Catholic Secondary Schools $156.13 Over the past twenty years or so, the subject of Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education has been developed in secondary schools in England as part of the curriculum of pastoral care. David Fincham argues that, where Catholic secondary schools are concerned, the development of Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education has been problematic and that the subject has challenged traditional and hierarchical perspectives in these schools. Organizing Schools for Productive Learning $157.72 This book offers an alternative approach to secondary school organization. In line with the definition formulated by John Deweys philosophy of education, the new approach aims to promote productive learning. The book shows the way to extricate schools from their past in order to respond more successfully to the requirements of the information age in which we are living today. The chapters treat the primary components of teachers work in schools in light of systems theory as opposed to the organization of instruction prevalent in todays schools that is designed in light of bureaucratic theory. The book demonstrates how the current principles of organization impede the change and improvement of instruction and by necessity create boredom and the routinization of teachers and students activity in schools. Zero Tolerance (Schools) $76.47 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In the United States and Canada, zero tolerance policies in schools and other education venues have been adopted. These policies are promoted as preventing drug abuse and violence in schools. They have occasionally resulted in egregiously unfair punishments against students and teachers, especially in schools with poorly written policies. The term may be used in general or with reference to a particular category of transgressions, a zerotolerance policy against alcohol use. Oklahoma Union Public Schools $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Oklahoma Union High School, located in the town of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma, was established in 1988. It was founded as a way to combine three local town schools in the area. The school mascot are the cougars. The three schools in the area were Wann, Lenepah, and Delaware. They were smalltown schools and the State of Oklahoma did not wish to fund them, nor did Nowata County. So in 1988 two of the three schools agreed to consolidate. Delaware, however did not. Wann and Lenapah successfully combined. After a few years Delaware started going south. Even though the school was there, Delaware parents wished to move their children there, which technically qualified in the district. ELearning in Secondary Schools in Kenya $173.65 Kenyas Information and Communication Technology (ICT) policy recognizes an ICT literate workforce as the foundation to economic growth, poverty eradication and improved school access. Yet to date only ten percent of the secondary schools in Kenya offer computer studies due to infrastructural constraints. For this reason, it was easy for the Government to embrace the New Partnership for Africas Development (NEPAD) eschools project due to its promised funding. As a result, research was done to investigate the governments preference of NEPAD e schools project instead of expanding access to computer studies in other secondary schools given the magnitude of the funding involved. This book is a product of research work done in the six NEPAD and nonNEPAD schools in Kenya. It seeks to expose the scope of ICT integration in secondary schools in Kenya by comparing the practice in the NEPAD and nonNEPAD schools. The results of the study may be of great importance to researchers, educationists, and policy makers because of its contribution to knowledge about ICT curriculum in Kenya. Micropolitics of International Schools $167.53 This book examines the conditions that lead to micropolitics in international schools, investigating the effects and manifestations of power, and analysing the factors that create conflict. It looks at the micropolitical interactions in two international schools, focusing on their history, management, location and sociocultural environment. Both schools are unique and affected by a series of diverse variables related to location, history, organisational structure and the people associated with each school. The book identifies five factors that give rise to micropolitics. These are the isolation of each school, its specific location, its history, the way it fragments and who has control. International schools can fragment due to the diversity of stakeholders, the different levels of power and influence within the school, and the development of cliques, subcultures and departments. This book will be an essential reference, not only for school leadership, management teams and research students, but also for those working in international schools. Restructuring Schools $103.47 Education reform has become part of a political imperative in a number of developed countries around the world. The simultaneous movement to reform schooling and the administrative structures which deliver educational services therefore needs to be studied in order to lay bare its fundamental assumptions. This movement has been labelled restructuring and reform, although the words carry different meanings in different countries.; The authors question why this reconstruction occurred at the same time in different places. What common themes are emerging in the restructuring movement? And in the 1990s, where will the movement lead schooling and what essential changes will it effect? They explore these questions by examining developments in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Charter Schools and Market Segmentation $114.71 This research was conducted to examine the effect(s) of charter school marketing on the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) education landscape with respect to the racial stratification of charter schools. Information from four sources: school websites, a survey of charter school parents, existing online statistics and data, and various school documents and marketing materials comprised the quantitative and qualitative data used in this research. The major finding was that there are two theoretical constructs at work, the market and the polis (Stone, 2006), that explain the stratification that exists within charter schools in the LAUSD. Each of these models describes charter schools at different times during the school life cycle. The polis dominates during the creation of a charter school, while market theory explains the operation and maintenance of ongoing charter organizations. Qin Schools $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A qin school is a school of guqin players that play in a style that is different from other styles. People often talk about regional styles because such a model simplifies things and because it is still somewhat applicable, though less so now than 100 years ago. Generally guqin is highly individualistic so players approaches will be very personal. Today the three main centers of guqin are Beijing, the Jiangnan area (lower Yangtze valley, including Shanghai) and Sichuan (especially Chengdu). Most major masters as of the 1950s were located in Beijing or Jiangnan; before that, they had been more concentrated in Jiangnan. For instance, Zha Fuxi and Wu Jinglue spent many years living and teaching in Jiangnan before being relocated to Beijing for official duties. Regional styles as of 5060 years ago would be rather different from regional styles in the present day, owing to the importance of a few masters and the conservatories in Beijing and Shanghai. Presently, given the strength of the conservatory system, northern and southern conservatory styles probably deserve their own status, separate from the older regional styles. Parents and Their Childrens Schools $67.85 The role of parents in their childrens education is an issue of critical importance. Many of the changes currently underway in British schools have been justified on the grounds that they provide what parents want. But what do parents really want? And how have they reacted to the changes already introduced in the UK, such as increased parental choice, the National Curriculum, and standardized assessment? Parents and Their Childrens Schools is the first book to tackle this important issue in depth and will be important reading for all those involved in education. It presents the findings of a unique research study which looked directly at these questions. The study followed 150 children through Key Stage One (57 years) of the National Curriculum, culminating in the first standardized assessments of 7 year olds ever to take place in the UK. The book presents the views of their parents and teachers, obtained through regular indepth interviews at crucial stages during this period. As such, it provides important insights into the changes currently underway in schools and their effects on parents. In a broader context, it makes a major contribution to our understanding of the fundamental relationship between parents and schools. Catholic High Schools and Minority Students $42.84 The number of minority students, many of them not Catholic, who have enrolled in Catholic secondary schools is substantial. Since it is reasonable to assume that the cost of tuition in such schools is considerable for a minority family, the phenomenon suggests that parents in these families believe that their children will obtain a better education in Catholic secondary schools. Comanche Language $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Comanche is a UtoAztecan language spoken by the Comanche people, who split off from the Shoshone soon after they acquired horses in around 1705. The Comanche language and the Shoshone language are therefore quite similar, although certain lowlevel consonant changes in Comanche have inhibited mutual intelligibility. The name Comanche comes from the Ute word k mmantsi meaning enemy, stranger. Their own name for the language is n m tekwap which means language of the people. Although efforts are now being made to ensure its survival, most speakers of the language are elderly, and less than one percent of the Comanche people can speak the language. In the late 19th century, Comanche children were placed in boarding schools where they were discouraged from speaking their native language, and even severely punished for doing so. The second generation then grew up speaking English, because of the belief that it was better for them not to know Comanche.
